#talkthestageCOLLOQUY by Gitikka Ganju Dhar

Is a series of musings & epiphanies that I started to write on the 13th of April, 2015. These revolve around the craft of anchoring and are born from experiences on the job.

If your credibility does not climb with you to the top, your stay at the top will be short.‪

And then there are ‪#‎events‬ that are beyond important. With no room for imperfection.
You drive yourself harder than hardest. And begin to tire.
And then comes a point, just before those steps up the stage, when you handover-to the star above, and hope it will 🌞 ting for you.
And that is why I say, events are ‪#‎magic‬. Because, beyond a point, it is not in your hands.
But to come to that point- ‪#‎DoYourBest‬‪

it on. Lo & behold-it ‪#‎fit‬!!
Hmmm ‪#‎Whatever‬, my shoulders shrugged.

It is the impossible stories that tell the longest.‪

Traditionally, for an ‪#‎anchor‬, it was important to read everyday. To read on a wide range of topics.
Nowadays, it is also important to view content on various media.
And to travel to experience.
It is what goes in, that comes out.‪

25% of what I say on events comes from listening to the speakers, sitting backstage.
For a live host, to listen is as important an ability, as is the ability to speak. ‪

We all get this urge. To burst our brilliance onto stage. To show-off, our talent.
I try and remember..there is the brand, the product, the chief-guest and all, all who must seem bigger than me, the host.
To curtail a bit, to hold back a bit, to stem a bit. For the real purpose of the show is them, not me. ‪

Yes, footwear can sometimes be a heel-deal breaker on stage.
If I cannot have a natural stance while walking around, talking on stage, half the fun is gone.
‪#‎Practical‬ over ‪#‎style‬ every single time.‬

Keep the door to learning, always open. There is always another, who knows more than you. Be greedy for this gift.

Is the ‪#‎MC‬, male or female, supposed to primarily be eye-candy for the audience?‬
I have often given it a thought.
And then, I listen to ‪#‎RoshanAbbas‬ talk. Ofcourse, he is good-looking. But am I looking, or am I just listening..with rapt attention.‬
If the audience is more ears than eyes, you will talk till you stand.

Write to be understood, speak to be heard & read to grow. – Lawrence Clark Powell.

"An anchor is the ‪#‎anchor‬ of a ship named-event. It is a huge responsibility, a delicious opportunity & a magical live experience.‬
I am fortunate to be entrusted with some very important babies, that I try to take to pride rock and present with true passion to an awaiting audience."

The microphone is a great buffer between an anchor & the audience. You talk, it translates your sound into magical waves. It is this exaggerated projection that is an anchor's biggest support.
Try speaking to a room full of people, sans mikey, make-up & margarita. Sans the projection. It is as basic as it gets. And the only anchor you have there is you.

More than the commercials of travel, stay & fees, the reason the same anchor is preferred to host 2/3 days of a multi-day event is the bond that is forged between the host & the audience.
The first step to forging this bond is that they must feel respect for your work, whether humour, straight-speak or random tittle-tattle. Affection for the host, bonhomie, only then, automatically follows & is authentic. ‪#‎talkthestageCOLLOQUY

For the first time ever ☆
People spend years and years creating a body of work. A reputation. It is the sacred duty of a ‪#‎host‬ to introduce them in words worthy of their achievements. Research is mandatory. Every introduction must be approached with respect. ‪#‎formalforum‬‬‬
